Why Regular Tire Service Is Important
In northeast Iowa, where gravel roads, frost heaves, and harsh winters are all part of life on the road, regular tire maintenance matters more than in other parts of the country.
Worn or underinflated tires:
- affect traction
- reduce fuel economy
- extend your stopping distance
- change how your vehicle handles
Tire Services at Vern Laures Auto Center
Our technicians inspect, rotate, and replace tires for all makes and models. We also check alignment when wear patterns suggest something else is going on underneath.
Tire Inspections
We recommend having your tires checked at every service visit or at least once a year. During an inspection, we measure tread depth at multiple points across the tire surface, check for uneven wear patterns that may point to an alignment or suspension issue, inspect the sidewalls for cracking or damage, and verify pressure against the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
Catching a tire problem early is much less expensive than dealing with a failure on the side of a highway.
Tire Rotation
Front and rear tires wear at different rates depending on your drivetrain. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, the front tires handle both steering and power delivery, so they tend to wear faster. On rear-wheel-drive trucks, the load shifts to the back. Regular rotation moves tires to different positions to even out that wear and get the most life out of each tire.
Most manufacturers recommend rotating tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. We can include a rotation with your next oil change if you are due for both.
Emergency Tire Service
We know that tire trouble rarely happens at a convenient time. Whether you’ve hit a pothole or have a flat, rely on our emergency tire service to get you back on the road safely. Call us immediately at 866-239-0371.
Tire Pressure and Air Loss
Correct tire pressure improves safety, ride quality, and fuel economy. Underinflated tires wear faster on the edges, run hotter, and affect handling. Overinflated tires wear faster in the center and reduce contact with the road.
Checking pressure monthly helps catch and resolve potential issues early. You can find the recommended PSI for your vehicle on a sticker inside your driver’s door jamb.
When to Replace Your Tires
The legal minimum tread depth in the U.S. is 2/32 inch. Most drivers should plan for replacement before reaching that point, especially heading into winter. At 4/32 inch, wet-road performance declines noticeably, and snow traction drops off fast.
At-Home Check
A quick at-home check: place a quarter upside down in a tread groove. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, you are close to 4/32 inch and should start planning. If a penny shows all of Lincoln’s head, you are at or near the legal minimum.
Other signs that replacement may be overdue:
- Sidewall bulges or visible cracking
- Frequent air pressure loss with no obvious cause
- Tires more than six years old, even with adequate tread
- Visible fabric or steel showing through the tread surface
If your tires are wearing unevenly, that often points to a wheel alignment or suspension problem rather than the tires themselves. We will let you know what we find.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tire Service
How often should tires be rotated?
Most manufacturers recommend every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. This lines up with most oil change intervals, so rotating at every oil change is a convenient way to stay on schedule. If you are not sure when you last had it done, we can check during your next service visit.
How do I know when my tires need to be replaced?
Tread depth is the most reliable indicator. The legal minimum in the U.S. is 2/32 inch, but replacement is recommended at 4/32 inch, especially heading into winter. Use the quarter test at home: if you can see the top of Washington’s head, start planning for new tires soon. Sidewall cracking, bulges, frequent unexplained air loss, and tires older than six years are also signs it is time to replace, even if the tread looks okay.
What is the correct tire pressure for my vehicle?
The recommended PSI is printed on a sticker inside your driver’s door jamb. Do not use the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall as your target; that is the maximum the tire can hold, not what your vehicle requires. Check pressure monthly and after significant temperature changes. In northeast Iowa, that means keeping a close eye on it through fall and early winter.
