How Often Should You Change Your Vehicle’s Oil?

Staying on schedule keeps your engine running cleaner and lasting longer. Most modern engines with conventional oil need a change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Vehicles running full synthetic can often go 7,500 to 10,000 miles or more between oil changes.

Your owner’s manual and your vehicle’s built-in maintenance reminder are your best guides. When you come in, we check the specific schedule for your make and model and tell you where you are.

Conventional vs. Synthetic Oil

Conventional oil is still the right choice for many older vehicles and lighter-duty applications. Full synthetic provides better protection at temperature extremes and under heavy load, which makes it a natural fit for trucks, SUVs, diesel engines, and anything doing regular towing or hauling. Synthetic blend falls in the middle: better protection than conventional oil at a lower cost than full synthetic.

Not sure which type your vehicle requires? We will check before doing anything.

How Iowa Climate Affects Your Oil Change Interval

Cold temperatures cause engine oil to thicken before it fully circulates, which puts extra stress on internal components during those first minutes after startup. If you are doing a lot of short-trip cold-weather driving, running a diesel, or regularly towing and hauling, your vehicle may qualify as “severe service” under most manufacturers’ guidelines. That can mean shorter recommended intervals than the standard schedule. Ask us about your situation, and we will give you a straight answer.

We Do More Than Change Your Oil

When you bring your vehicle in, we do more than drain the oil and replace the filter:

  • Replace oil with the correct type and viscosity for your vehicle
  • Install a new oil filter
  • Check and top off fluid levels, including coolant, brake fluid, power steering, and windshield washer fluid
  • Check tire pressure and adjust to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI
  • Perform a visual inspection of belts, hoses, and accessible components under the hood
  • Review your current maintenance schedule and flag anything coming due

Most oil changes are completed in 30 to 45 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Changes

How often should I get an oil change?

Most modern vehicles using conventional oil should have it changed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Vehicles running full synthetic oil often go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between changes. Your owner’s manual and your vehicle’s onboard maintenance reminder are the most reliable guides. If you drive under severe conditions, such as frequent cold-weather short trips, heavy towing, or high-dust environments, you may need service more often. Give us a call, and we will help you figure out the right interval for your vehicle.

What type of oil does my vehicle need?

Your owner’s manual specifies the correct oil type and viscosity for your engine. Common specifications include 0W-20, 5W-30, and 5W-20. Newer vehicles are increasingly calling for lower-viscosity synthetic oils. If you are not sure what your vehicle requires, bring it in, and we will look it up before doing any work.

How long does an oil change take?

Most oil changes at our New Hampton service center are completed in about 30 to 45 minutes. If we notice anything else during the inspection, we will let you know before doing any additional work.

Do I need an appointment for an oil change?

Yes. Appointments help us provide timely service and minimize your wait time. Call us at 866-239-0371, and we will get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

Do you work on all makes and models?

Yes. We service all makes and models, not just the Chevrolet, RAM, Jeep, and Chrysler vehicles we sell. If you have a question about your specific vehicle before coming in, call us, and we will tell you upfront what to expect.
